Philip McCann

Over the past decade I have trained in the UK, Europe, North America and Australia to broaden my exposure to upper limb surgery and equip myself with the diagnostic and operative expertise to deliver excellent patient care. I have developed a wide range of specialist skills that have enabled me to deliver a confident, modern orthopaedic practice.

I obtained my primary medical qualifications at the University of London. I then undertook my surgical training in the South West region, principally within Bristol.

Following completion of my training program I undertook further sub-specialist training as the Trauma and Upper Limb Fellow at the University of Western Australia, before returning to Bristol where I was appointed Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. During this time it has been my pleasure to deliver a contemporary, focused and energetic upper limb service with a focus on shoulder and elbow pathology.

I have always had a passion for surgical research and have taken an active interest in the academic controversies in both orthopaedic trauma surgery and elective upper limb orthopaedic surgery. I have had the privilege to be involved in a number of research projects, which have been presented at both national and international meetings.

Furthermore, I have always had great enthusiasm for medical education, on both an undergraduate and post-graduate level. I actively participate in the training of all grades of junior doctors and allied health professionals within a University Teaching Hospital and lecture to the higher surgical trainees locally on shoulder and elbow disorders.

I have designed and implemented a number of surgical training courses within the South West region. I have also been an Orthopaedic tutor both at the University of Bristol and at the University of Western Australia.

My interest in medical education led my to undertake formal training in this field, obtaining the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education from the University of Bristol with Distinction.

I have always enjoyed a variety of sports such as mountain biking, road cycling, running and golf. However my main priority outside of work remains my wife Kate and my two young children, with whom I enjoy a range of outdoor pursuits.
